Linden Park Road

Linden Park Road is a development of 2-bedroom apartments in central Tunbridge Wells, for client Edbury Estates. The site is a disused and overgrown plot of two acres, dropping steeply from Linden Park Road and backing onto the gardens of Montacute Terrace. This is a car-free development within easy access of The Pantiles, benefiting from the amenities and transport connections of the town centre.

Edbury Estates asked Southstudio to take a fresh look at the site, having lost an appeal to The Planning Inspectorate for a previous scheme. The sensitivity of the location within the Tunbridge Wells Conservation Area, as well as constraints such as mature listed trees, meant that over the years a number of alternative Planning Applications had been rejected. By careful review of the reasons for refusal, as well as detailed consultation with TWBC Officers, we were able to define a sensitive new approach. The design makes reference to the predominantly Arts & Crafts villas of the immediate area, having a similar palette of materials, building mass and form. This approach allowed a total of nine units to be provided, an increase on previous schemes.

The apartments are planned as dual or triple aspect, with good natural light and views to adjacent greenery. A low-energy strategy is employed, with high insulation levels, air-tight construction, and triple glazing to windows, as well as a combined heat and power system to serve all units with maximum efficiency.
