The site forms part of Southstudio’s master plan for The Stonebridge Redevelopment. It is located along Milton Avenue immediately south of the newly redeveloped Stonebridge Primary School site. The street rises up towards the eastern boundary, which is defined by the proposed public open space.
The setting is an unbalanced, single sided street of Edwardian terraced houses, a result of partial site clearance to make way for an unfinished 1970’s housing development. The existing houses are aligned almost on the back of pavement, creating a hard edge to the street of articulated brick bay frontages with pitched slate roofs over.
The design proposes 22 three storey terraced houses to complement the existing scale and complete the sense of a normative, two sided street pattern. All residences are 4 bedroom, 6 person accessible houses, with the larger end of terrace houses designed as wheelchair adaptable dwellings to meet Building Regulations, Part M4 (3). All houses have private rear gardens and smaller front gardens including enclosures for refuse and bicycle storage. Parking is on-street, with designated disabled parking spaces adjacent to the end houses.
The proposal creates a clear division between public and private realm, and is designed with front gables to pick up the rhythms evident in the Edwardian terrace opposite. The new terrace steps up the street incrementally, and is articulated in projecting bays punctuated with recessed brick panels and windows.
The scheme comprises high quality 100% affordable rented family townhouses, designed as a modern interpretation of the existing terrace opposite. The project gained full planning permission in 2019, and is now under construction with a completion date in summer 2022
